A Quantitative Assessment of the Morphological Characteristics of BeWo Cells as an in vitro Model of Human Trophoblast Cells International Journal of Morphology
Abaidoo,C.S; Warren,M. A; Andrews,P. W; Boateng,K. A.
In order to study the detailed morphology of trophoblast cells during human implantation, BeWo cells were cultured as spheroids in suspension culture. These cultures were then processed for light and electron microscopical examination. The present study showed that the BeWo spheroids consist of two cell types which are cytotrophoblast-like and syncytiotrophoblast-like. The cells with larger nuclear diameter made up only about 1% of the cell population and appear to be those of syncytiotrophoblast. Therefore the predominant cell type of the BeWo spheroids appeared to be relatively undifferentiated and cytotrophoblast-like. About 10% of the BeWo cells in the present study were mitotic, indicating a highly proliferative population. Total cell number increased...

The growth relations of the shrimps Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis (Latreille, 1817) and F. paulensis (Pérez-Farfante, 1967) were evaluated at Imboassica lagoon, Macaé, Rio de Janeiro State, between June 1995 and September 1997, in four periods after events of sandbar opening. This sandbar separated the lagoon from the Atlantic Ocean. Through the evaluation of the weight/length relationships for the two species, significant differences in each interval after the sandbar openings were observed, as much among males and females as among all individuals of the same species. The results indicated that both species presented negative allometric growth in most of the studied occasions. The frequency and abundance of the two species in the lagoon is linked to many...

Almeida,M.D. de; Caldas,A; Almeida,J.R. de.
The species Phaleria testacea Say, 1824 (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae) varies a lot in size, and its populations along the coast of Brazil, where it lives buried in sandy beaches, have temporal and geographical variation in density. In order to find out which factors were contributing to these variations, we sampled populations from three different areas in Rio de Janeiro, during summer and winter. Simultaneously, we made an analysis of the different substracts where the individuals were found, including their total fresh weight. The results show a significant difference in size of individuals between and within populations, when summer and winter were compared. There is also a positive association between the population density of P. testacea and the amount...

Morphological and allozyme studies of midwife toads (genus Alytes), including the description of two new taxa from Spain Naturalis
Arntzen, J.W.; García-París, M..
Allozyme variation in 31 to 50 presumptive loci of 12 populations of European midwife toads of the genus Alytes show appreciable genetic divergences (DiNe from 0.29 to 0.72) among four groups. These groups correspond to A. cisternasii Boscá, 1879, A. obstetricans (Laurenti, 1768), A. muletensis (Sanchiz & Adrover, 1979), and a new species from the Betic mountains described here as A. dickhilleni n. sp. Smaller divergences among geographic groups of populations of A. obstetricans (up to DNei = 0.17) support the existence of three geographic units in Europe corresponding to the previously recognized subspecies A. o. obstetricans and A. o. boscai Lataste, 1879, plus a third one described here under the designation of A. o. almogavarii n. ssp. The analysis...

Comparative analysis of morphological, structural and morphometric patterns of Polistes versicolor (Olivier) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) hypopharyngeal glands Neotropical Entomology
Britto,Fábio B.; Caetano,Flávio H.; Moraes,Regina L.M.S. de.
Using ultramorphological and histochemical techniques, this study describes the structural and morphological patterns of Polistes versicolor (Olivier) hypopharyngeal glands, comparing them with patterns of other Hymenopteran groups. Besides, the presence of intra-specific variation was evidenced by morphometric analysis of the secretory cells in wasps with different ages. The studied species presented glands with primitive characteristics, with secretory cells discharging individually in the hypopharyngeal plate. The morphological pattern found in hypopharyngeal glands was basically the same for all studied wasps, however, the length of glandular cells showed significant variations between individuals. Apparently these variations are not related with age.
